GMAT stands for Graduate Management Admissions Test. It is a 3-1/2 hour standardized exam designed to predict how test-takers will perform academically in MBA (Master's in Business Administration) programs. To gain admission to an MBA program, chances are you'll need to take the GMAT. About two-thirds of the 1,300+ graduate business schools around the world require GMAT scores for admission. It is a 3 part test: GMAT Verbal, (reading comprehension, critical reasoning, writing) GMAT Quantitative (Math) and GMAT AWA (analytical writing assessment). It is used to measure an individual's verbal, math and analytic writing skills developed throughout their work and school career. It does not measure interpersonal skills, job skills or business knowledge.

Each graduate business school develops and implements its own policy concerning the use of GMAT scores in making admissions decisions. Many schools screen applicants by combining GMAT scores and undergraduate GPA (each school determining its own weighting), then ranking all applicants in their initial pool accordingly. If you are thinking of taking the GMAT, there are many places to help prepare for the test(start at your local bookstore). Also make sure that you take several full-length practice tests under simulated exam conditions before the actual test.
